Read Celik’s comments ahead of Roma v Viktoria Plzen

Here is what he had to say.

You’ve probably found the position in which you are most effective, namely as a wide centre-back. Did you expect to be so good in that position? And given that your contract is about to run out, have you already started discussing a potential renewal?

“I can play as a wide centre-back as well as a wing-back; it's not a problem for me. My goal is to always have good performances. That is what matters to me. I’m focused on the game. I’m happy in Rome; we’ll see what happens.”

You have become a centre-back. How has this change been for you? Do you think you’ve become 100% comfortable in this position or do you also enjoy running up and down the flank?

“I’m very comfortable in this position: I can defend and I can attack. I’m happy I’m playing well.”

Throughout these years, there were times when you weren’t very popular. But you can take a hit; you always push through. Do you feel as though you should thank someone in particular for helping you become the very proficient player you are today?

“I realise that I’m not a popular player, but I work hard every day. I focus on my performance and I’m happy when I’m with the rest of the team. We work hard every day with our coach: I believe he has helped me improve my performances. I want to thank him because I like what we do in our training sessions.”

You’ve said that he is a coach who experiences a match like no other. Is that true? And most importantly, why is he different from the other coaches you’ve had?

“I’ve had many great coaches, but with him we work very hard in our training sessions. He has a winner’s mindset, and we improve with him as our coach. I like him.”

Is this the best you’ve played so far in your career?

“I believe I also played well for my previous team [Lille]: we achieved good results, so I’m happy.”

Earlier you said that you’re comfortable both out wide and at centre-back: has this always been the case for you? And can you tell us about the first time you were told here at Roma that you could play in the centre?

“I played in nearly all positions in Turkey, also on the left side of defence. I’ve played in all positions. This idea didn’t surprise me. I feel comfortable in every position.”
