Wijnaldum: "I want to give back to the fans"

Read what goalscorer Georginio Wijnaldum had to say after our 3-1 home win against Sampdoria!

How important was it to win this game?

“It was really important, because in the last two games we didn’t get the results we wanted. To stay and compete for the Champions League spots, we needed a win today. I’m happy with my goal, although I would have preferred to score in the first half when I hit the post. In the second half I did it, but it’s a team result. I think everyone played well.”

The fans have always made feel loved. How do you feel now that you are showing your worth?

“It has been really important. I felt the love since I first came here. The fans already showed that they loved when I joined this club, and even more when I got injured. The support I got was amazing. I want to give back to the fans in terms of results and the way I play on the pitch. I give everything that I have. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't, but today it went well with a goal and helping win the penalty. I just try to do my best for myself, but also for them. They have showed a lot of love for me.”

Is your future here at Roma dependent on qualifying for the Champions League?

My future doesn’t depend on the Champions League. I have already showed that by coming here. We didn’t have Champions League but I still came here, because the manager showed me support and let me know that he wanted me. I made my choice off how I felt, and that is going to happen again in the summer. It’s difficult to say what I am going to do, or what is going to happen because there are other people who have to decide. But what I can say now is that I am feeling good here, and I’m happy with my teammates, the manager and the fans.
