Hellas Verona 1-3 Roma: Volpato delivers decisive late moment

Substitute Cristian Volpato was the unlikely hero as Roma left it late to beat Hellas Verona on Monday evening.

The Giallorossi eventually ran out 3-1 winners at the Stadio Bentegodi - but Volpato's matchwinning effort only arrived in the 90th minute, before Stephan El Shaarawy added a clincher moments later.

Nicolo Zaniolo had earlier equalised after Pawel Dawidowicz had given the hosts the lead; the Polish defender then getting himself sent off for a high lunge at Zaniolo.

With the numerical advantage in their favour, Jose Mourinho's side spent much of the second half pushing for a winner - finding themselves frustrated at almost every turn as the Verona defence, or the woodwork, conspired to the deny them.

But as injury time approached the tide finally turned, as Nemanja Matic turned his man inside out to reach the byline before cutting the ball back to Volpato - who delivered a first-time finish that nestled in the bottom corner.

The teenager then turned provider for El Shaarawy, his pass breaking between the defence as the Italy international flicked the ball over the goalkeeping before sweeping home.

After an occasionally fraught evening the Giallorossi had earned the three points they had come for - and can now turn their attention to matches later this week against Ludogorets and, on Sunday, Lazio.
