Alessandro Spugna's side dominated the match from almost the very first whistle, yet somehow found themselves 2-0 down with less than 20 minutes remaining at the No Arena.
Elena Linari's powerful finish literally and figuratively opened the floodgates with 15 minutes remaining, however, as Valentina Giacinti equalised mintues later (following in Andressa Alves' missed penalty) before Manuela Giugliano and Paloma Lazaro both scored from distance to turn the game around.
A late goal from Mikolajova set up the sort of dramatic, tense finish that a rollercoaster match warranted; but the Giallorosse held on to secure a potentially vital win in their bid to reach the knockout stages of the competition.
"We showed fantastic character - the girls were amazing," Spugna said afterwards.
"Going behind despite creating so many chances can be really disheartening, but instead the girls showed incredible fighting spirit and produced perhaps the greatest response I've seen since I got here. It was a special effort."
