Women's Champions League: Sparkling victory to see off Glasgow City!

Roma Women ensured they enjoyed a successful UEFA Women’s Champions League debut on Thursday night, as they beat Glasgow City 3-1 to progress to the next round.

The Giallorosse will now face Paris FC on Sunday for a place in the first knockout phase of the competition, after they saw off the Scottish league runners-up in some style at Petershill Park.

Benedetta Glionna was the star of the show, twice putting Alessandro Spugna’s side ahead – before substitute Paloma Lazaro rounded off an eye-catching cameo with the decisive third goal late on.

Hosts Glasgow had briefly equalised midway through the first half after Moeka Minami’s unfortunate own goal, although in truth further clear-cut chances were relatively few and far between.

Roma know they face another significant hurdle if they are to continue further in Europe; Paris having beaten Swiss side Servette 3-0 earlier in the day.

"We are delighted to have started off in the competition like this, we worked so hard to make sure we were ready," Glionna said.

"It was tough at the beginning but we did well to stay aggressive and, in the end, we took advantage of the chances we created."

With wind, rain and a synthetic pitch greeting the players in Scotland, it was perhaps hardly ideal conditions for the side to make their debut in European competition. But, after a slow start, Roma quickly showed flashes of the quality that saw them finish second in Serie A last term.

Wingers Glionna and Emilie Haavi were both at the heart of a number of attacking moves, although it was the former who ultimately made the breakthrough. The Italy international glided into the Glasgow box from the right, before unleashing a low shot that found the far corner.

That seemed to only embolden Spugna’s side, yet they were pegged back almost immediately in unfortunate circumstances – as Minami turned into her own net from close range as she attempted to deal with a dangerous cross.

That was it for first half action, although Roma continued to look the more threatening side. In the second half that additional threat was ultimately capitalised on; with the introduction of Lazaro proving particularly significant.

First the Spanish forward played in Glionna perfectly for her second of the game, before finishing clinically herself after a mistake in the Glasgow defence had gifted Glionna the ball high up the pitch.

With not long left in the game at that point, the side were able to see out the contest with the minimum of fuss.

Now the focus will turn to Sunday, and another big European clash with Paris.

"We'll watch this game back and then we'll start thinking about the next one," Glionna added.

"We'll try to make sure we are even better prepared for Sunday."
