The Giallorosse, top of the standings currently in Serie A, gained a measure of revenge for last season’s defeat in the Coppa Italia final against the same opposition, as they ran out 4-3 winners on penalties after drawing 1-1 after 120 minutes at the Stadio Tardini.
Just like during the team’s first trophy win, the 2019 Coppa Italia, it was goalkeeper Camelia Ceasar who had a decisive say: saving from Cristiana Girelli and, crucially, Sofia Cantore to spark wild celebrations for Alessandro Spugna’s side.
“In a penalty shootout the goalkeeper has nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Ceasar said afterwards.
“So I just try to have fun and enjoy myself out there.
“Now the cup is coming back to Rome!”
Striker Valentina Giacinti had given Roma the early lead in the game, only for Lisa Boattin to level things up with an impressive free-kick on the hour-mark.
The remainder of the game saw both sides take turns in gaining the ascendancy, with Benedetta Glionna and Girelli both going close to claiming a decisive goal for their respective sides.
In the end, however, it all came down to the lottery of penalties. It was Juventus who drew first blood as Glionna fired high, but Ceasar immediately saved from Girelli to prevent the Bianconere confirming their advantage.
With the Giallorosse going first it was Haavi’s nerveless finish that left Juve needing to score to keep the game alive; instead Ceasar stuck at a leg to deny Cantore and put Roma colours on the cup.
“I am just delighted for the girls and everyone who works with the team every day,” Spugna said.
“Because we all really work hard. Both teams had chances to score the winning goal but we stayed focus and stayed in the match and we got to penalties, where Camelia did what she seems to do every time!”
