On This Day: We win our first-ever Italian title!

Eighty years ago today, 14 June 1942, Roma beat Modena 2-0 to become champions of Italy for the first time in the club's history.

Here we have picked out eight great photos that tell a story from that remarkable season...

It makes sense to start with the trophy! Here is the prize awarded for the winners of the 1941-42 season, which was presented to the team on 6 September 1942 as the side played a home friendly against Bagnolese.

A wooden base has a silver plate attached to it, on which is engraved: "FIGC, AS Roma, Champions of Italy 1941-42'.

Here are featured a selection of telegrams that were sent to the club, via then-president Edgardo Bazzini, in congratulations for the achievement.

Messages came from Italo Foschi, the first president of the club, among many others.

Club president Edgardo Bazzini leads a number of the team's players on a tour of the pitch ahead of their first training session in preparation for the 1941-42 season. This took place at the Stadio Nazionale in late August, with goalkeeper and captain Guido Masetti leading the session - as coach Alfred Schaffer was still to return from Germany.

In the image, from left-to-right: Luigi Nobile, Masetti, Miguel Angel Pantò, Amedeo Amadei (half-hidden), Giuseppe Bonomi, Sergio Andreoli, Bazzini and sporting director Vincenzo Biancone.

In the background Luigi Brunella hugs physiotherapist Angelino Cerretti. Between Bazzini and Biancone are two young players included in pre-season training, Alfredo Guadagnoli and Augusto Proietti.

In front: Aristide Coscia, Aldo Donati, Sergio Andreoli and Mario Acerbi with three young fans.

Roma coach Alfred Schaffer comes out of the tunnel ahead of Roma's 3-1 win over Savoia in a friendly ahead of the 1941-42 season.

As Torino were losing 3-1 to Venezia elsewhere, Miguel Angel Pantò celebrates one of his goals during the 6-0 win over Ambrosiana at the Stadio Nazionale on 31 May 1942.

The win put Roma back on top of the table with just three games remaining in the season.

Miguel Angel Pantò celebrates the historic own goal from Maximiliano Faotto which, in the 91st minute, decided the Derby della Capitale in Roma's favour.

The January victory would end up playing a vital role in the Giallorossi's eventual success.
