The Giallorossi hit the woodwork no fewer than four times in a game they dominated from almost start to finish, being denied victory despite more than 40 shots on goal.
Almost start to finish, however, because they conceded after less than a minute to David Okereke's flicked header - a blow they spent the rest of the contest trying to recover from.
In the end it was not until substitute Eldor Shomurodov lashed home in the 76th minute that they restored parity.
At that point, and with Venezia already down to 10 men after Sofian Kiyine's first-half dismissal, another come-from-behind victory for Jose Mourinho's men seemed probable - but it would not arrive, as the woodwork and misfortune proved two determined obstacles.
The result is a blow for Roma's European qualification hopes, although they will have to wait to see how other results this weekend go.
They have one more league encounter, away to Torino, before next Wednesday's Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.
