Roma Women 7-1 Hellas Verona: Unbeaten run emphatically extended!

Roma Women took another giant step towards Champions League qualification as they beat Hellas Verona 7-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Giallorosse, looking to continue their unbeaten run before the latest international break, made light work of their already-relegated opponents - cruising to a victory that means five points from their final three games of the season will be enough for them to be playing in Europe next season.

Milica Mijatovic scored her first two goals for the club to give Alessandro Spugna's side an early advantage.

Andressa Alves, Paloma Lazaro, Valeria Pirone, Benedetta Glionna and Sophie Roman Haug (also getting her first goal for the club) all also got themselves on the scoresheet.

"It was the performance we wanted," Spugna said afterwards.

"We wanted to dominate the match, we wanted to dictate things from the off. Even though they scored a consolation, the main thing is that we put in a quality performance.

"We dominated from start to finish."

Roma could have been ahead after just three minutes, had Glionna not been denied by the Verona goalkeeper from close range. But Mijatovic fired home soon after and, with confidence buoyed from that moment onwards, the Giallorosse proved to be increasingly unstoppable as the game wore on.

"I'm pleased with the three points and to have scored my first goals for the club," Mijatovic said.

"It's a win we needed as we look to reach the Champions League. We want to qualify and to do that we need to finish the season strongly. We want to win the last three [league] games.

"That's our first target, then after that we want to go as far as we can in the Coppa Italia. We have another big semi-final game coming up."

The result meant Roma temporarily moved within two points of league leaders Juventus, and eight points clear of AC Milan (who also still need to play this weekend) in the chasing pack.
