After going behind midway through the second, Aniello Parisi's side briefly got back on level terms after Riccardo Pagano converted from the penalty spot - only for Vassallo to head home the winner for Genoa moments after.
"We played great, we missed chances but that's football - it happens," Parisi said.
"What interests us is always how our players are developing and improving and from that point of view we are pleased with all of them. They've improved massively, that's clear for all to see, and that's what we are delighted about."
He added: "Now it is about continuing their development, moving up to where the championship is a bit tougher, physically more difficult, and they will need to adjust to that again."
