'Il Principe' ('The Prince' - as he was dubbed by coach Azeglio Vicini) made his senior debut as a substitute against Cesena. Replacing Roberto Scarnecchia 10 minutes into the second half, Giannini did not exactly enjoy a dream debut - playing a role in the decisive role that the visitors' Antonio Genzano (born in Rome) would ultimately score.
From a tough start, however, Giannini would eventually thrive - going on to make 437 appearances for the club, score 75 goals and become captain and bandiere for the side in the early 1990s.
In doing so he became an inspiration for a whole generation of young Roma fans - including a certain Francesco Totti, who idolised Giannini completely.
