On This Day: Giannini makes his debut

On 31 January 1982, a young academy graduate by the name of Giuseppe Giannini made his debut for Roma.

He would go on to become one of the greatest players in the club's history.

'Il Principe' ('The Prince' - as he was dubbed by coach Azeglio Vicini) made his senior debut as a substitute against Cesena. Replacing Roberto Scarnecchia 10 minutes into the second half, Giannini did not exactly enjoy a dream debut - playing a role in the decisive role that the visitors' Antonio Genzano (born in Rome) would ultimately score.

From a tough start, however, Giannini would eventually thrive - going on to make 437 appearances for the club, score 75 goals and become captain and bandiere for the side in the early 1990s.

In doing so he became an inspiration for a whole generation of young Roma fans - including a certain Francesco Totti, who idolised Giannini completely.
