The Spanish forward fired home twice as the Giallorossi eventually ran out 4-3 winners - earning a modicum of revenge after the midweek Coppa Italia exit against the same opposition.

“I think this was a really important game for us, in this moment for the team,” Mayoral said.

“We really celebrated that one, we won it and that’s the key thing.

“We know that it has not gone as we wanted recently – but we’ve won today, for the fans as well. We are really pleased."

He added: “I am ready to help the team in every game. I missed a few chances in the last match but today I scored. That’s the life of a striker.

“We are united, we are working hard every week. We’ve lost two important games recently but today it was all about getting the three points.”
