Cristante headed home after just 18 minutes to send the Azzurri on their way, in a comfortable win for Roberto Mancini's side at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Gianluca Mancini also played the 90 minutes, partnering Francesco Acerbi in the heart of defence.
Francesco Caputo, Stephan El Shaarawy and Domenico Berardi also got on the scoresheet, as a Moldova own goal completed the rout.
El Shaarawy led the side out on the night, with Cristante assuming the captaincy once his former Roma teammate was substituted.
