After taking a first half lead through Edin Dzeko, in the second half the Giallorossi were overrun – eventually falling to a 4-1 defeat at the Gewiss Stadium.
“We played a great, battling first half,” Fonseca said. “And then in the second half we played like boys, like kids.
“The team started off determined and combative. The attitude changed in the second half. The game is played over 90 minutes, not 45. The players need to understand that there cannot be such a difference between the performances in each half.”
He added: “We always want to win, and today we came here to win as well – but if we play like we did in the second half today then it becomes very tough to come away with three points.
“In the second half I saw a side that lacked aggression, it was too easy for them to win. Without that aggression you can’t win a game like this.”
