Roma 2-2 Juventus: Veretout heroics cancelled out

Roma were forced to settle for a draw against Juventus on Sunday evening, despite twice taking the lead at the Stadio Olimpico.

Matching penalties from Jordan Veretout and Cristiano Ronaldo - both after unfortunate handballs - got both sides up and running in the first half, before Veretout finished off a sweeping attack on the stroke of half-time to give the Giallorossi the advantage once again.

In the second half, however, Ronaldo equalised for a second time, this time with a towering header - as the visiting champions escaped with a point despite Adrien Rabiot's red card.

Looking to get their first win of the new season, Paulo Fonseca's side started brightly and often looked threatening - with Henrikh Mkhitaryan seeing a glorious self-made opportunity somehow denied by Wojciech Szczesny.

In the second half, with Roma looking to build on their slender advantage, Edin Dzeko twice saw great opportunities go begging - the first of them as his shot from eight yards clattered away off the far post.

After Ronaldo's impressive header, both sides looked for a fifth and final goal to little avail - with Pedro flashing narrowly over from a tough position in the closing stages.

The Giallorossi are back in action next weekend, as they travel to face Udinese.
