The Giallorosse grabbed a first away win of the season in dramatic fashion, as Annamaria Serturini scored the winning goal late on in the principality.
Prior to that it had been the Lazaro show - the Spanish forward scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the campaign to twice give the team the lead in the first half.
But Betty Bavagnoli's team were twice pegged back by San Marino through Raffaella Barbieri - once from the penalty spot, once from a close-range rebound - as they were left to toil for a third goal during the second half.
In the end it was Serturini who provided it, picking up on substitute Alice Corelli's astute ball to fire home as Roma picked up a win that some would perhaps have expected come more easily.
"I'm pleased we got the win but we need to change our mentality," Bavagnoli said afterwards.
"I was not happy with the attitude we showed in the first half and I asked the girls to change that. I did not see the team playing the way I want them to - we had a different plan for this game."
