Roma World: Meet Martina Covetti from Italy

Last week we kicked off a new series of Roma World with a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, but for this week's instalment, we've not had to travel very far at all...

Name: Martina Covetti

Age: 28

City: Rome

Country: Italy

Where did you grow up?

“I grew up right here in Rome!”

Why did you choose Roma?

“When I was a child, my father used to travel for work, so it often happened that he was away from home for the week. Watching Roma with him on Sunday was a lovely way spending time together, even though I didn't understand what I was watching. As I grew up, I carried my father’s passion for this club, and developed my own.”

What is your first memory of Roma?

“I was four years old, and watching a game with my father. After the first half, Roma was down by two goals, and my father was upset. I told him, 'Don't worry, we're going to win 3-2!' He smiled and kissed me. The game ended with a Roma win!”

Who was your first Roma hero and why?

“Vincenzo Montella. I loved his aeroplane and the way he smiled. I definitely had a crush on him growing up.”

What is your memory of your first game at Stadio Olimpico?

“I was nine years old, and my father took the entire family to the Stadio Olimpico. It was unbelievable for me - the fans, the songs, the pitch in front of my eyes. I’ll never forget it.”

What is your favourite Roma kit of all time?

“I love the current third kit, but my favourite one of all time is the 1999-00 white shirt.”

Who is your favourite current Roma player, and why?

“Lorenzo Pellegrini. He is the kind of player who never gives up. He is technically gifted, and I love the effort he puts in for the team, week in and week out. He is a hometown boy, and he loves our colours. He could be the future of this club.”

If you could meet anyone connected to Roma - past or present - who would it be and why?

"I choose two - Daniele De Rossi and Stephan El Shaarawy. De Rossi has been my soul on the pitch, and my mind outside the pitch. El Shaarawy is the player I loved the most over the past few seasons."

Can you explain the importance of Roma to the city of Rome itself?

“For this city, Roma is an innate passion that is deeply rooted in the people. It's a strong social identity - you belong to Roma and Roma belongs to you.”

What makes you most proud to be a Roma supporter?

“I’m incredibly proud of all the charity campaigns Roma created over the years, and especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, I love the values of equality they promote. The attention for underprivileged people, and the kindness towards fans and supporters is amazing.

"The club is unique for using social media to broadcast awareness about integration, collaboration, and kindness. I will never miss a chance to express my gratitude to the club for everything that they’re doing.”
