Giugliano on life in lockdown, missing her teammates and more

Roma Women midfielder Manuela Giugliano was a guest on Roma TV this week, as she discussed life in lockdown.

The Italy international answered questions on a number of topics - here is some what she had to say during the interview...

On the current lockdown…

“I’m dealing with this situation as calmly as possible – I’m lucky, because I am home with my family, so I’m trying to enjoy that as much as possible while I can. Right now we all need to stay home and respect the rules.

"The club has given us a programme to follow that involves training twice a day – so each day is pretty busy. We are all following the plan, the staff make sure to keep an eye on us day-by-day. Other than that I pass the time cooking for my family – I like to experiment on different recipes with my mum. We will have everything ready for Easter!

“I can certainly say that I am proud to be part of a club that is really trying to do some good right now; even if the season is suspended right now all the players – both for the men’s and women’s team – can do a lot to help the cause. We are ready and proud to be involved.”

On becoming a role model…

"To think that I might now be an idol for someone is a bit of a dream, something I imagined being when I was a kid. I can only give some advice to the children that follow me: to enjoy yourself in what you do, because that what makes your dreams more real. My idol as a kid was Alessandro Del Piero, but also Andrea Pirlo.

"As a kid I often felt like I was being judged because I played alongside the boys – they would tell me to go and play a girl’s sport instead. But then there was one day that I will never forget: I played with the boys and after nutmegging two of them I scored a goal. From that point onwards everyone wanted me on their team and I think that changed some perceptions, especially in the eyes of those who previously looked at me with disdain."

On her teammates…

"The first ones to training are [Annamaria] Serturini and [Manuela] Coluccini. The best dancer in the squad is [Lindsey] Thomas. The funniest teammate? Probably Coluccini. [Federica] Di Criscio cooks a great risotto, another reason I can’t wait to see her again!"
