World Book Day: 10 great AS Roma books

To mark #WorldBookDay, we’ve decided to put together a run-down of 10 fantastic books about the history of AS Roma and the figures that have shaped it

    1. Storia illustrata della Roma Dalle origini ai giorni nostri [An Illustrated History of Roma from its Origins to the Present Day] - Ezio Saini, Olimpia Editore, 1954.

The first book to collate the history of the club. As a single volume it’s very rare, but the edition split into instalments is more common.

    2. I campioni che hanno fatto grande l’AS Roma [The Players That Made AS Roma Great], Tiziano Riccardi, Newton Compton Editori, 2019

This book looks back at the glorious past of the club through profiles of the 31 members of the AS Roma Hall of Fame, as voted for by the Giallorossi fans. Two goalkeepers, eight defenders, 11 midfielders and ten forwards: 31 AS Roma legends.

    3. Forza Roma! I tempi di Attilio Ferraris e Fulvio Bernardini [Forza Roma! The Times of Attilio Ferraris and Fulvio Bernardini] - Vittorio Finizio, Edizioni Sportive Italiane, 1975.

A thrilling journey back in time through the Campo Testaccio period, detailing the friendship and sporting feats of two iconic Roma players and the passion that swirled around the club during that era.

    4. Una città, una squadra [One City, One Team] - Enrico Mania, Fiorani editore, 1977.

An official publication marking the club’s 50th anniversary, with a preface written by Gaetano Anzalone. The author was able to consult official club documents – and the book is packed with details and anecdotes as a result.

    5. La storia della grande Roma in 501 domande e risposte [The Story of La Grande Roma in 501 Questions and Answers], Luca Pelosi, Newton Compton Editori, 2019

The perfect guide to help you throw yourself into the story of an endless passion. This is an infinite journey, as every answer poses a new question and the more you read the more you learn that… you never stop learning.

    6. L'ultima partita. Vittoria e sconfitta di Agostino Di Bartolomei [The Final Game. The Victory and Defeat of Agostino Di Bartolomei] - Giovanni Bianconi and Andrea Salerno, Limina, 2000

The sporting and human story of the captain of Roma’s second Scudetto win. Republished in 2010 with a preface written by Di Bartolomei’s son Luca.

    7. E non ti curar di loro ma gioca e passa [Don’t Worry About Them, Just Play and Pass] - Massimo Izzi, independent, 2009

An encyclopaedic work on the 1943 Scudetto win, complete with interviews with all the key figures and a rundown of the path to glory.

    8. La maglia che ci unisce [The Jersey that Unites us] - Paolo Castellani, Massimiliano Ceci, Riccardo De Concilis, 2012

Every Roma jersey in the history of the club, with a preface written by Francesco Totti.

    9. 55 secondi [55 Seconds] - Tonino Cagnucci, Paolo Castellani, Pagine, 2014

An intense account of the 1984 European Cup and Roma’s defeat in the final – the greatest moment in our history and still a source of pride for the club.

    10. Dimmi cos'è, la più grande storia mai raccontata [Tell me What it is: The Greatest Story Ever Told] - Tonino Cagnucci, Luca Pelosi, Skira, 2017

An official book released to mark the club’s 90th anniversary, in which an imaginary Agostino Di Bartolomei tells the story of Roma to a child. Features illustrations by Fabio Redaelli and a host of rare photos.
