Matchwinner Lorenzo Pellegrini dedicated his two goals to Nicolo Zaniolo, as Roma progressed in the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 win over Parma on Thursday night.
Pellegrini scored both goals at the Stadio Tardini to send Paulo Fonseca’s side through to the next round, where they will face Juventus.
Speaking after the game, Pellegrini spared a thought for a teammate who was watching the game at home in Rome.
“Other than my family, I dedicate these goals to Nicolo [Zaniolo],” Pellegrini said.
“He’s like a little brother to me. I love him and hope to see him back out on the pitch very soon – because we need him.”
He added: “I took a knock at the end but I’m good, it’s one of those that hurts initially but you can run it off. I’m pleased to score two goals but especially pleased we got the win.”
It was Roma’s first win of 2020, after starting the New Year with defeats against Torino and Juventus in Serie A.
“This game was doubly important for us – beyond getting through to the next round it was important to win because it’s never nice to start the year with two defeats,” Pellegrini said.
“Today we showed our desire to get the victory – you don’t lose that after two games, but nevertheless it was critical that we got the result – for our confidence.”
