Hegerberg delighted to contribute to landmark win

Andrine Hegerberg and Betty Bavagnoli were understandably both delighted as Roma Women sent a message of intent with a 2-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday afternoon.

Looking to bounce back after an opening weekend defeat at home to AC Milan, Bavagnoli’s side faced an uphill battle against La Viola – who are competing in this season’s Champions League.

But in a determined, disciplined performance, Camelia Ceasar saved a first-half penalty before Annamaria Serturini broke the deadlock with a breathtaking strike – a strike that seemed to turn the tide firmly in the Giallorosse’s favour.

When midfielder Hegerberg prodded home late in the second half, Roma had secured the club’s first-ever win against another of Italy’s biggest sides.

“Today was a really tough game, but we knew that and we were prepared for it,” Hegerberg said.

“Fiorentina are a really strong side. We prepared well, we wanted to put in a better performance than we did against Milan. This was a team win; we came here to take the three points and we did that.

“I’m really pleased to have scored my first goal, even if, as I said, this was a team win – Anna [Serturini] scored a great goal. In the end we got the three points and that is what matters.”

The coach was similarly delighted with her squad.

“I’m really pleased with the win, the girls have really pleased me with the way they took on this game exactly the way we prepared it,” Bavagnoli told Roma TV.

“We struggled a bit at the start, giving the ball away too much, but once we found the breakthrough then things got a bit easier.

“I’m really pleased because I asked the girls for more, I asked them to be more courageous, and the girls understood that their efforts in that respect can make all the difference.”
