On This Day in 1942: Roma become champions for the first time

On this day in 1942, AS Roma won Serie A for the first time in the club's history.

A 2-0 victory over Modena proved the clinching moment for Alfred Schaffer's side, thanks to goals from Renato Cappellini and Ermes Borsetti early in the first half.

The Giallorossi clinched the title by three points over Torino - driven in large part by the goals of Amadeo Amadei.

The team opened the season with a 5-1 win over Napoli (from whom they signed Cappellini, the most expensive arrival of the summer) and finished the campaign with six wins in their last seven games, the decisive run of form.

Roma won 16 of their 30 games, drawing 10 and losing just four - at least three games fewer than any other side.
