Hegerberg: I've loved Roma since I was a kid

Roma Women midfielder Andrine Hegerberg has revealed how her summer move to the Italian club has been many years in the making.

The announcement that Hegerberg, a central midfielder, would be joining the Giallorosse was welcomed by many – including by her sister, Ballon d’Or winning striker Ada Hegerberg, who celebrated with a throwback photo of the sisters wearing Roma gear while both of them were still children.

Speaking to Roma TV, Hegerberg explained how the duo had always been fans of the club.

"Me and Ada are quite close, so when she congratulated me [on the move] I wasn’t really surprised as we’ve always followed each other’s careers very closely,” Andrine said.

“Since we were kids we’ve always been into football, we are a big football family, and we actually watched a lot of Italian football when we were kids – because it was always on television. And once we went to Rome on a summer vacation.

“We went to the AS Roma Store and we bought all this stuff – I think from different seasons I had three different Roma shirts. I remember the black one - that was my favourite and I used that all the time.

"So me and Ada have been huge Roma fans since we were kids.”

Despite the long-held affection for the club, Hegerberg’s decision to make the switch to the Italian capital this summer was not purely motivated by sentimentality.

“I decided to choose Roma after visiting the club, I got [a tour of] where we train and got told about the ambitions the club has,” she said.

“And that’s maybe the point where it got me, because it’s an interesting project going on.

“They told me about the other players they were looking to bring in, the players they already have, what the club has achieved already and what they want to go on and achieve. And that is something I am really interested in and I hope we can achieve that together.”

Hegerberg, who spent the past two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, will add another option to coach Betty Bavagnoli’s midfield – where the likes of Vanessa Bernauer and Giada Greggi have been joined for the new season by Manuela Giugliano, Andressa Alves and more.

“My style of play is quite technical,” Hegerberg noted.

“I have a good left foot that I try to connect to my brain sometimes, I try to find solutions and open space to play in the attackers. I can also shoot and score sometimes, but reading the play is perhaps my biggest quality.”

She added: “My target for this season is to try and help the club as much as possible. We have high ambitions for this season.

"I want to win - that’s why I play, that’s why I train everyday. I want to be at the top all the time and that’s what we are aiming for this season.”
