Zaniolo sees performance as 'starting point' as side look to recover

Nicolo Zaniolo believed Roma showed 'positive signs' on Wednesday night, despite being held to a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina.

The Giallorossi ensured they did not lose a third straight game thanks to a spirited display at the Olimpico; coming from behind twice to secure a share of the spoils.

Zaniolo scored the first of those equalisers with a fine glancing header and, while the side did not get the win they needed, believes the display was something to build on.

“We wanted to win but Fiorentina are a good side and they made it tough for us," Zaniolo said.

"Now we are focusing on Sampdoria – there are eight games left we need to win.

“The boss asked us to show the attributes required to get out of this tough moment. We showed a few positive signs tonight, it’s a start."

After sitting on the bench throughout the weekend defeat to Napoli, Zaniolo was substituted off late in the game on Wednesday.

“I had a virus earlier in the week – I didn’t have 90 minutes in my legs," he explained.

"I was a bit tired and I thought it was better for Cengiz to go on, as he was fresh.”
