Greggi eager to bounce back against Fiorentina

Roma Women midfielder Giada Greggi believes the side can bounce back when they face Fiorentina on Sunday.

The Giallorosse go into the game looking to make amends after a disappointing start to the season, as Betty Bavagnoli’s side lost 3-0 against AC Milan on the opening weekend.

But the challenge only gets tougher for the group, with Fiorentina having finished second in Serie A last term – and off the mark already this season with a 4-2 derby win over Florentia.

“Fiorentina are one of the big sides in women’s football, they have a lot of players in the national team,” Greggi told Roma TV.

“From that you can already get an idea of how strong their side is – but we will go there to play our game, giving everything we have because we are not second best to anyone.”

She added: “The game against Milan was pretty even, and very intense even if there weren’t many clear-cut chances. In the second half slowly tiredness started to creep in, but Milan were better able to keep playing their game and from that perspective they were better than us.

“But, despite that, it was the first game of the season, these things can happen, so we shouldn’t put too much emphasis on it. The season has just begun."

The game was perhaps most noticeable for a record attendance for the side - with over 2,000 fans turning out despite the burning midday heat.

"It was great to see so many fans at Tre Fontane, it was an indescribable feeling," Greggi said.

"Especially to see so many at that time of the day too. They had to open the other stand up for fans during the game too, which was amazing to see.”

Greggi is in her second season with Roma, after a debut campaign that saw her underline her status as one of the most exciting young midfield prospects in Italy – and even wear the captain’s armband towards the end of the campaign.

“Wearing the Roma shirt is always a magical feeling, as a Roman and a Romanista it’s a huge honour,” she said.

“Taking the captaincy from Elisa Bartoli was incredibly special, especially as she is a player and a person that I hugely admire. But I have to thank the staff as well for giving me that opportunity.

“My aims are to keep improving, both technically and tactically, and to give everything towards helping the team qualify for the Champions League. We also want to reach the final of the Coppa Italia and have a chance to win it.

"Personally, I would really like to earn an international call-up – because to represent your country is a huge honour.”

Sunday's game against Fiorentina, broadcast live on Sky Sports in Italy, gets underway at 12:30 local time.
