Past meetings: Our history with our ICC 2019 opponents

On Thursday we discovered our opponents in the 2019 International Champions Cup: the Giallorossi will face Chivas, Arsenal and Benfica in three games in the United States this summer.

Ahead of those meetings, we looked at some of our past meetings against the trio...

Chivas, Arsenal e Benfica: saranno queste le nostre avversarie nell’International Cup 2019 negli Stati Uniti, tutte già affrontate dalla Roma nel corso della sua storia.

    Benfica

Roma and Benfica have actually met each six times before (including friendlies): the Giallorossi winning three of those, and drawing two more.

The first meeting came back in the quarter-finals of the 1982-83 UEFA Cup. On that occasion Benfica won 2-1 at the Olimpico, meaning that a 1-1 draw back on home surf was enough to send them through against the Giallorossi - who would win the Scudetto that year.

The four further meetings all took place between 1990 and 1991. The sides played two friendlies 12 months apart, with the first being drawn 1-1 and the other being won by the Giallorossi 2-1. Between those, however, the sides met in the first round of the UEFA Cup - Roma progressing on that occasion thanks to a 1-0 in both legs.

    Arsenal

Roma and Arsenal have met seven times in their history, including friendlies as well as European competition.

The first meeting came in pre-season friendlies, the sides facing each other in both the pre-season of 2001 and 2002. Roma won the first meeting 1-0, and lost the second (which was just 45 minutes) 2-1.

The sides subsequently met a total of four times in quick succession in the Champions League. In 2002-03 the two clubs were drawn together in the group stage, with Arsenal winning 3-1 at the Olimpico and the game being drawn 1-1 at Highbury. Six years later the two sides met in the knockout rounds; a 1-0 home win for each side meaning the tie was decided by penalties - won by the Premier League side.

    Chivas

Roma have only faced Chivas Guadalajara once before in their history - in the Los Angeles Gold Cup back in 1987.

On that occasion the Mexican side ran out 4-2 winners.
