Elisa Bartoli and Annamaria Serturini both played their part as Italy went out of the Women's World Cup on Saturday after a 2-0 defeat against the Netherlands.

Roma Women captain Bartoli started the match in Valenciennes, as the Azzurre looked to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition for the first time ever. But she was substituted at half-time with an apparent leg injury, as the Dutch went on to run out 2-0 winners.

Serturini made her World Cup debut late in the game, as she was added to the fray as a substitute.

Italy were ultimately undone by two goals from dead-ball situations, in what was an otherwise even and hard-fought game in the sweltering afternoon heat.
