Bavagnoli fires side up for huge cup opportunity

Roma Women face arguably the biggest game of their fledgling existence to date on Wednesday, when they go up against Fiorentina in the second leg of the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

The Giallorosse go into the game on an even footing after drawing the first leg 1-1 last month, although are perhaps slight underdogs for the clash – with La Viola, also in the hunt for the Serie A title this season, enjoying home advantage.

The two sides have drawn both meetings this season (both of them in Rome) and will meet again on Saturday in the final game of the league campaign where the title could yet be decided, meaning it promises to be a frantic finish for both sets of players this week.

The game in Florence gets underway at 15:00 local time and coach Betty Bavagnoli believes her side are ready to put their best foot forward – especially after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Pink Bari at the weekend.

“We’ve prepared well, trying to restore a bit of energy, especially mental energy, after the game against Bari,” Bavagnoli said.

“It’s the end of the campaign and all of the teams are battling against fatigue a little bit, especially teams like ours that have a lot of international players in the squad. That’s another reason why we made a few changes against Bari.

“These two matches against Fiorentina will be very tough, considering the quality of the opposition, but tomorrow’s match is also a huge opportunity for us: reaching the final of the Coppa Italia in our first ever season would be an incredible, beautiful achievement.

“I’m certain my girls will give everything they have out there.”
