Gallery: Roma Women hold on to beat Florentia at home

Roma Women got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, as they ran out 3-1 victors in a hard-fought game against Florentia.

Betty Bavagnoli's side, already somewhat depleted due to injuries, had to cope with adversity once again at Stadio Tre Fontane - as midfielder Flaminia Simonetti was forced off with a knee problem early in the second half.

By that point the Giallorosse were 1-0 up, thanks to Allyson Swaby's first-ever goal for the club.

Vanessa Bernauer doubled the advantage soon after Simonetti's departure but, after Isotta Nocchi grabbed one back for the visitors, it was not until Martina Piemonte converted a last-minute penalty that the game was finally killed off.

“It was a key game, and a tough one,” Bernauer said.

“We had to give everything, and I’m pleased we took the three points. It doesn’t matter whether the goal was mine or not – the main thing is we won.”

It was an even game throughout at Tre Fontane, with Roma only taking the lead in the first half thanks to Swaby's towering back-post header from a corner.

It was Bernauer's dangerous delivery that created the chance and, early in the second half, the Swiss international would go one better - scoring directly from the corner flag as her awkward ball in seemed to evade everyone on its way into the net.

Both goals were celebrated with dedications to recently injured teammates - midfielders Manuela Coluccini and Claudia Ciccotti were both watching from the stands - but things had already got worse for Bavagnoli, as Simonetti was forced off.

That uncertainty emboldened Florentia, who cut the deficit with 20 minutes remaining to set up a frantic finish. Roma defended well, but it was not until captain Elisa Bartoli won a last-gasp penalty - converted by Piemonte - that the result was put beyond doubt.

“The girls reacted well to setbacks – and showed their support for their injured teammates too," Bavagnoli said.

"They played well, they kept on working and always played with a positive approach. Clearly we are not in our best moment from a fitness standpoint, but to bring home all three points despite the many issues means we are on the right path.”
