Gallery: Women show improvement as Fiorentina are pegged back

Roma Women were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw with Fiorentina at Stadio Tre Fontane on Sunday, in a game that nonetheless underlined the development of Betty Bavagnoli's side this season.

Fiorentina are one of the powerhouses of Italian women's football, but La Viola were pegged back for long spells of the game by the Giallorosse - who finished the 90 minutes strongly, searching for a winning goal right until the end.

While there were chances at both ends it was certainly the home side that had the most of them - with Alysson Swaby, Giada Greggi and Agnese Bonfantini among those to go close.

“I have to give praise to the girls – they were incredible,” Bavagnoli said. “They are a great group and today they showed that.

“Today we wanted to make a step forward in our growth, we wanted to show how we have improvement. We saw that against a great side like Fiorentina; we played the way we wanted to. This performance will really help us continue to grow."

The coach reshuffled her pack slightly for the game - with Swaby, Greggi and Bonfantini all starting after being on the bench for last weekend's win at Bari.

Swaby was paired in central defence with 16-year-old Heden Corrado, making her second start in a row.

“We played an even game, it wasn’t easy,” Corrado said. “It was a battle – we put in a good performance and we’re please about that.

“I’m happy to have been able to repay the coach’s faith. I want to keep improving.”

The team now has a brief winter break, before returning for the second half of the campaign.

“I must admit that I could feel that the girls need a chance to recharge their batteries a bit," Bavagnoli said.

"The break now has come at the right moment. I want to wish them all happy holidays – and all Roma fans.”
