Bavagnoli wants new faces to step up for Coppa Italia derby

Roma Women coach Betty Bavagnoli is taking nothing for granted as her side prepare to face Roma Calcio Femminile in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.

The two capital sides head to Campo Certosa for the first leg of the contest on Wednesday afternoon, which pits Bavagnoli’s side – fourth in Serie A – against their local rivals, who currently sit fifth in Serie B.

Roma CF knocked out Lazio in the last round to reach the last-eight, while the Giallorosse eased past Orobica.

The Coppa Italia quarter-finals are played over two legs – so both sides will return to Stadio Tre Fontane later in February to decide matters.

“Clearly, the fact it is a two-legged tie means all 180 minutes will be very important,” Bavagnoli said.

“We are going up against a side that plays nice football, a side that are very focused and determined.

“As always, we will not under-estimate anyone – we have respect for every side we face, and perhaps even more for a club with a great history like Roma CF.”

While the Coppa Italia is a big target for the side this season, Bavagnoli is considering rotating her options for the contest – perhaps also with one eye on the weekend trip to face league leaders Juventus in Serie A.

“I’m going to make a few changes tomorrow, obviously, above all to give some of the other players a chance to play and to impress,” she said.

“We want them to get some match action under their belts, also so we can see how they are all progressing and improving. At the same time, of course, that allows us to give a bit of a rest to some of our other players who have played a lot of games.”
