Stat Attack: Facts to know as Real Madrid come to town

Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash against Real Madrid, here a few key facts and figures to know...

Our most common adversaryL’avversario più affrontato in UCL

Roma have faced Real Madrid 11 times in European competition - all of them in the Champions League. Los Blancos are thus the Giallorossi's most common opponents in the competition. So far the head-to-head record reads like this for Roma: 11 games, 3 wins, one draw, six defeats. Roma have scored nine goals and conceded 19 in those 11 games.

    Record streak run?

Tuesday's game gives Roma the chance to set a new record - four successive victories in the Champions League. It is a feat the club have never managed before - not even during the run to the final of the European Cup in 1983-84.

Seven in a row at the Olimpico…

After beating CSKA Moscow at home on Matchday 3, Roma made it seven straight home wins in the competition (stretching back through last season) - the club's best-ever run. Before the 3-0 win against CSKA Moscow the wins included Chelsea (3-0), Qarabag (1-0), Shakhtar Donetsk (1-0), Barcelona (3-0), Liverpool (4-2) and Viktoria Plzen (5-0).

    Spanish inquisition

Roma have faced six different Spanish sides in European competition during their history: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Valencia and Villarreal.

    A first for the Giallorossi

Roma scored their first-ever goal in the Champions League in this very fixture, back in 2001. It came on September 11, just a few ours after the infamous terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and at the Pentagon. Francesco Totti scored the goal, although Roma went on to lose the game 2-1.

    A famous win in 2007-08

Roma have beaten Real Madrid at home just once, in the first leg of the last-16 of the Champions League back in 2008. The Giallorossi went behind to a goal from Raul, but recovered to secure a famous result thanks to strikes from David Pizarro and Mancini.

The second leg perhaps lives even brighter in the memory - Roma winning at the Santiago Bernabeu by the same result (thanks to goals from Rodrigo Taddei and Mirko Vucinic) to progress to the next round of the competition.

A famous European night against Spanish opposition

Few fans will probably need reminding of the last time a Spanish side came to the Olimpico in the Champions League - it was Barcelona, in the quarter-finals of last season's competition. Roma famously came back from a 4-1 first leg deficit to win the tie - with Kostas Manolas scoring the decisive goal in an unforgettable 3-0 home win.

    Hitting the target against Real

It should perhaps be no surprise that Francesco Totti has scored more goals for Roma against Real Madrid than any other player (3). The other six players to have managed a goal: Antonio Cassano, Daniele De Rossi, Mancini, David Pizarro, Rodrigo Taddei and Mirko Vucinic.

    Early qualification?

Roma could have qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League by the close of play on Tuesday - depending (of course) on how results pan out. Victory for the Giallorossi will guarantee their place in the knockout phase of the competition, as will a draw. But, should CSKA and Viktoria Plzen draw elsewhere, both teams at the Olimpico will be guaranteed their place in the last-16.

Most qualification battles went to the wire…

Of the 10 previous occasions Roma have qualified from the group stage in the Champions League, only twice have the Giallorossi managed it with a game to spare - in 2001-02 and 2007-08.
