Bavagnoli wants side to underline their growth against Fiorentina

Coach Betty Bavagnoli believes Sunday’s Serie A game against Fiorentina is another important test for Roma Women on their journey towards becoming a great side

Fiorentina, champions two seasons ago, are once again in and among the pace-setters as the league campaign approaches its halfway stage, while the Giallorosse are starting to challenge for a spot inside the top four after a strong run of results in recent weeks.

In front of the fans at Stadio Tre Fontane and once again being broadcast live on Sky Sports in Italy, Bavagnoli hopes the visit of Fiorentina on Sunday will prove to be another valuable learning experience for the squad.

“It’s a big motivation for us to face a top side like Fiorentina, it gives us a push to play well and see how much we have grown,” Bavagnoli told Roma TV.

“We want to keep on making steps in the right direction before we go into the short winter break, which these girls definitely need and have earned.

“Like any team, playing against Fiorentina we want to play our way and stay true to our philosophy. We have great respect for them as a team, they are among the very best in the league, so there’s a real desire for us to measure ourselves against one of the best and boost the confidence of the group - as we try to every day in training.

“We are continuing to work hard and finding out where we need to improve to become a great side, but we are on the right path.”

Bavagnoli will be without midfielder Trudi Carter, who underwent surgery to repair a knee problem this week, but the likes of Agnese Bonfantini and Giada Greggi should be available after overcoming knocks in recent weeks – while defender Jenny Bitzer is also nearing a return to full fitness.

The visitors are expecting a tough game.

“I think Roma are a great side, they’ve managed to find an interesting mix of tradition and innovation,” Fiorentina coach Antonio Cincotti told the club’s official website.

“They have some experienced players, but they also have a number of talented youngsters in their squad. But I think they have the potential to become one of the best sides in the league, capable of competing for every trophy. So we know it will be a tough game.”

Sunday’s match gets underway at 12:30 local time. Entry for supporters is free.
