Roma currently sit bottom of Group E with two points, while BATE have three points, Bayer Leverkusen four and Barcelona out in front with seven points after three games.
With Roma needing a win to keep alive realistic hopes of qualifying, Schmidt knows he’ll need to find the right balance between attack and defence if his team are to leave Rome with all three points.
"Every match is different when you play away from home,” claimed the Leverkusen coach. “Roma will come out on the attack and we'll need to pay a lot of attention to our defensive work. Nevertheless, we won't close up and we'll still try to play expansively."
Do you fear Gervinho and Mohamed Salah?
"Roma have got quality players, like these two. We're aware that our attacking style of play means that we'll risk leaving ourselves open at the back but we'll do our best to try and keep a leash on them. We have to finish in second place to qualify for the next round and this is what we want."
Could Edin Dzeko and Javier Hernandez be the difference in this match?
"They are both key players for their respective teams. I've been watching Dzeko and he added a lot to the side before he got injured. Step-by-step he'll get better."
Bayer have changed formation and players a lot in your last two games. Will that be the case on Wednesday as well?
"Obviously we've got a few different options for tomorrow's match, also in terms of the players we have available. We need to bear in mind how important this game is and that some of our players lack experience."
Have you been watching any of Roma's matches? Which Giallorossi player would you have in your side?
"Naturally I've followed Roma in their last couple of matches. Winning and losing games is a part of football and this has happened to them recently. Roma have got a lot of good players, just like we do, but we're fine as we are."
What are the differences between Roma and Lazio since you've played them both?
"Lazio's style is completely different to Roma's. You cannot compare Lazio with the Giallorossi, who have a more dynamic way of playing. The Biancocelesti are a good side, but they have nothing in common with Roma."
