Seven top bars for a post-match drink

Seven top bars for a post-match drink

Whether you’ve been to the Olimpico or watched the game at home, if you’re looking for a late-night bar to celebrate a win or debate what went wrong, Rome has much to offer

Here’s seven bars that are perfect for a post-match drink…

TRASTEVERE

Ma che siete venuti a fa'

Known to regulars simply as ‘Macchè’, this quality bar tucked away behind Piazza Trilussa is one of Rome’s best-known hotspots. Small and always packed, it’s the ideal place for beer lovers. Quench your thirst with bottled or draft beers (€4-6), either propping up the bar or stood outside in the midst of the Trastevere nightlife. Their selection also includes German and Norwegian beers, plus England’s Five Points Pale Ale and Italy’s very own Vento Forte Sour Session.

Ma che siete venuti a fa', via di Benedetta 25, tel. (+39) 06 6456 2046.

TESTACCIO

Rec 23

Open daily from 18:30 until late (the kitchen closes at 01:00), Rec 23 fuses Sardinian flavours with a New York atmosphere. Whether for dinner or a quick bite to eat, the restaurant is big on sharing and street food. Order a plate of nachos (€7.50), meat skewers with mostarda, avocado and prawn pittas (€8) or mini sandwiches and burgers (€7-9), as well as BBQ ribs (€15).

There are lots of different whiskeys on the menu, from Scotland, the US, Ireland and Japan (€7-14), as well as rums from Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Venezuela and even Samaroli, distilled in Ireland (€8-20).

Rec 23, piazza dell'Emporio 1/2, tel. (+39) 06 87462147

TORRE ARGENTINA

Open Baladin

Open Baladin was set up in 2009 near Rome’s Campo de’ Fiori. Teo Musso was the brains behind the establishment, which is home to one of the capital’s largest selection of craft beers. They have more than 100 different bottled beers from the best domestic brewers, including Super, Belgian Strong Ale, Open White – a wheat beer – and honey-flavoured Mielika.

There are as many as 40 draft beers (€5) - from lagers to ales, like Cortigiana, and Belgian beers such as Elixir, an amber beer made with the yeast of whisky. You have to try the famous Fatate (€5-7), potato chips made fresh with original flavours including liquorice and sweet paprika.

Open Baladin, via degli Specchi 6, tel. (+39) 06 683 8989

CELIO

Tree Folk's

Round the corner from the Colosseum you’ll find this English-style pub. Split over two floors, customers at Tree Folk’s can try one of the many traditional British real ales pulled from a proper pump (€6). The pub also offers a decent menu, try their fish & chips (€7.50) or grab a burger (€7-14).

SAN LORENZO

Luppolo 12

Owners Diego and Gabriele decided to open in 2012 inspired by their passion for craft beer. Luppolo 12 offers 16 beers on tap, two pump ales and four glass cases that can accommodate up to 150 different bottled beers, including some lambic varieties. Luppolo 12 is large and comfortable and offers Wi-Fi as well as board games and computers to surf the net. ‘Balla coi luppoli’ is an event held every Tuesday with draft beers from just €3.50, while you can enjoy a pre-dinner snack of cheese and cured meats with your beer for €5 every day between 18:00 and 21:00.

FLAMINIA

Treebar

Treebar is a bar-restaurant with a view of the park. Its minimalist yet functional decor gives it a Scandinavian feel, inside a wooden building with lots of windows built in Piazza Manila, next to the disused railway line. Every day they bake bread, focaccia, bread sticks and pizza in their wood-burning oven using organic products from Treefarm.

These include the wheat and barley malt to make their lagers, ales and their own brew ‘Apart’ (€5-6). Treebar is also a restaurant, with a menu ranging from home-made fettuccine (€10) to rumpsteak with roast potatoes (€17) and home-made desserts (€6-8).

COLA DI RIENZO

Morrison's

Founded in 1994 by Giovanni Boldini and designed by architect McNally, this traditional Irish pub is now run by Luigi Parise. Morrison’s has built up a loyal band of regulars thanks to the events it organises for rugby’s Six Nations, as well as Roma and Italy national team matches. The pub offers a large selection of whiskeys, including Lagavulin 12 with its peaty flavour and Talisker 10 with its smoky notes (€10-15).

You can tuck into a classic burger (€10) or upgrade to a gourmet whiskey BBQ burger (€13). There are lots of beers on tap, including Guinness, Pale Ale and Brown Ale (pints cost €6, halves €4).
