Walter Sabatini has acknowledged that Roma failed to take their chance to cut the gap with Napoli at Atalanta on Sunday, but is adamant that the Giallorossi aren’t about to let up.
The Roma sporting director conceded that the Giallorossi could have managed the game better, but underlined the fact that it was the first time in over ten games under Luciano Spalletti that the side have lacked a bit of focus.
“We’ve missed an opportunity today but we won’t let up,” Sabatini said after the final whistle. “We could have managed the game better after our first two goals, but this is the first time that’s happened in ten or 12 games under Spalletti.
"Roma must hit their minimum target of getting third spot, but we have an eye on second and are aiming for that too.”
What’s your verdict on the match?
“It’s tough to sum up a game like that. At 2-0 up we should have managed the situation better. We weren’t up to scratch defensively today. That said, there’s no point dwelling on these things because we still have five important matches left to play.”
Was there a mix-up with Lucas Digne? It ended up costing you.
“No, it was just an unfortunate occurrence. He’d asked to come off but ten seconds previously he’d done an overlapping run. He was suffering but continued to run and play the match. It was just an unlucky moment, that’s all.”
Why is Edin Dzeko struggling in certain situations?
“I’m going to say something that will be criticised but that’s fine by me: Edin was playing very well but then he fired over the crossbar when he should have scored and from then on it was a different performance from him because he was struck by pessimism. Dzeko deserves respect and often he doesn’t get it. He’s a great player and a model professional. He’ll pull through this spell. If people analyse the match as a whole they’ll realise he produced a good performance today.”
Roma’s third goal stemmed from a Dzeko backheel…
“That’s right, it gave [Francesco] Totti the chance to fire home.”
