Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan was the match-winner as Belgium beat Sweden 1-0 to progress to the knockout stages of the European Championship on Wednesday.
Nainggolan, restored to the starting lineup by coach Marc Wilmots for the crucial clash, found the net with a trademark rasping drive from 25 yards with just six minutes remaining to clinch the three points for his side, in the process ensuring the Red Devils finished second in Group E.
Belgium will now face Hungary in the last-16 of the competition on Sunday.
Wilmots' side finished level with Italy on six points, but were pipped to top spot in Group E as the Azzurri won the head-to-head meeting between the two sides.
Nainggolan's strike was the first goal by a Roma player at a European Championships since Daniele De Rossi's strike for Italy against France at Euro 2008.
