Luciano Spalletti believes his side need to rediscover their best form from the back end of last season if they are to take maximum points from Sunday's game against Sampdoria.
The Giallorossi are back in action following a two-week break for international football - but the team's last result, a 2-2 draw with Cagliari, remains fixed in the memory.
"We've lost our way a touch in terms of shape," said the coach in a press conference. "We're not as tight as a unit as we once were. Closing down the space between the lines is crucial and we still have some way to go on that.
"We'll assess what we've done thus far this season and compare it to what we managed last term."
Spalletti will take charge of Roma for the 250th time on Sunday against the Blucerchiati.
"What matters now is getting our shape right as a team," he added. "We must be tighter, more compact and show greater consistency in what we want to do as a unit. We did that well last year and it was easy to revel in that because everyone helped out their team-mates.
"When the side gets stretched it's tough to help out a team-mate, keep the ball and get everyone involved in possession. That's what we'll work on today in training."
