Club Atletico San Lorenzo de Almagro is a multi-sports club based in Buenos Aires, originally from the Boedo neighbourhood.

The club was founded on 1 April 1908 and named after Father Lorenzo Bartolome Martin Massa. The priest had offered the local church yard as an area to play in for the boys known as Los Forzosos de Almagro, who previously played in the streets.

San Lorenzo are one of Argentina's most successful clubs having won 15 league titles.

In 2014 San Lorenzo lifted the Copa Libertadores for the first time, defeating Paraguayan outfit Nacional Asuncion in the two-legged final. Later that year they lost the Club World Cup final to Real Madrid in Marrakesh.

Pope Francis is a renowned San Lorenzo fan. His membership number is 88,235.

Three days after Jose Mario Bergoglio was elected, San Lorenzo paid homage to him by taking to the field in specially produced shirts bearing an image of the new Pope beneath the words 'Papa Francisco'.

San Lorenzo are known by a number of nicknames including El Ciclon (The Cyclone) and Los Cuervos (The Crows).

They play their home games at the 43,000-seater Estadio Pedro Bidegain, usually referred to as El Nuevo Gasometro.

San Lorenzo are preparing to return to their original neighbourhood, Boedo, which they were forced to leave in the early '80s. Their new stadium will be named after Pope Francis.
