Vermaelen admits side will have to analyse 'disappointing' result

Thomas Vermaelen admitted the squad will have to closely analyse what went wrong after Roma slipped to a 2-2 draw with Cagliari on Sunday

The Giallorossi were 2-0 up at Sant'Elia after just 46 minutes, but Marco Sau's late equaliser ensured Luciano Spalletti's side went home with just one point to show for their efforts.

"It is very disappointing that we didn’t win," Vermaelen told Roma TV. "We will look at this game, like we do every game, to see what went wrong.

"I think we have to improve our overall game to get better results and I think they came here and gave us a hard time. [But] maybe 2-0 should be enough, so at the end of the day it is very disappointing."

Roma sat notably deep for large parts of the second half, with Vermaelen acknowledging that the defence will have to work on ways to push up the field in future.

He said: "We tried to defend high, of course, but sometimes in the game it is not possible for whatever reason. Of course we want to play higher up the pitch but sometimes you get pushed back. That was the case a little bit today, and we will try and work on it to improve on it because we want to play higher. Overall we were under a bit of pressure today."

He added: "Of course you want to do that [defend high up]. I’m used to playing high up the pitch for the clubs I’ve played for, and the Mister [Spalletti] wants to do so well, so we will do our best to improve that over the coming games."
