Porto warm up for Champions League play-off with 1-0 win over Estoril

Porto set themselves up for the second leg of the Champions League play-off against Roma with a 1-0 win over Estoril in Week 2 of Portugal’s Primeira Liga on Saturday night

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were made to wait for the breakthrough at the Estadio do Dragao, but Andre Silva’s 83rd-minute header ensured the three points went to Porto. The win means the Dragons have six points from their first two games of the season.

“I still think the championship is the best way to prepare for the play-off of the Champions League,” said Nuno Espirito Santo after the game. “We wanted to win this match, and now we can think of the second leg, recover the players, who were under tremendous effort this week, and get ready for the match, as we are still alive.”

Mexican winger Jesus Corona agreed that it was a big win ahead of the trip to Italy: “This victory motivates us for the match against Roma; we are now going to prepare it well, with full focus and commitment, so that we can reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.”

Roma take on Porto at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Tuesday night with the scores level at 1-1 from the first leg.
