Szczesny: Roma v Napoli is a game between two angry teams

Wojciech Szczesny believes Roma and Napoli go into Saturday afternoon's big match with one thing in common: anger

“I think it will be a very interesting game because it’s between two teams that are angry,” said the Poland international a day on from the match against Lazio. “Napoli have lost their last two games and we lost the derby, so both teams will have a massive desire to go and get the result.

"I believe it will come down to the quality of the two teams and their mental strength.”

He added: “Of course it’s never a good thing to lose a derby. It’s a disappointing result but the good thing is we have a big game straight away. We have to focus again and prepare ourselves for Napoli."

On Napoli's strengths...

“I never like to think that the opposition has more than us. We are a quality team that always goes out there to win the game and it will be the same this time round. I think Napoli play lovely football. They play good possession football, they keep the ball, they play very fast and I respect that. But I believe the quality will hopefully show on Saturday.”

On Roma's chances of making the Coppa Italia final despite losing the first leg...

“We’re only at half time as it’s a game of 180 minutes. We lost a match, which is bad but it’s far from over. We have the second leg at home and I believe it’s the team’s responsibility to get the result right in the second game and qualify for the final.”

On the squad rotation with Alisson...

“I feel that Alisson pushes me to be better. Only Alisson can tell you if I push him to be better too but I think our friendship - rather than rivalry - works well for both of us. I’m satisfied with how I’m doing in Serie A and he’s doing very well in the cups. It’s working very well for the team and that’s the most important thing.”

On his future...

“I don’t know. I’ve always said and I’ll keep saying it as long as I’m here: my future is the next game. I’ve been performing well this season with this sort of mindset - focusing solely on the next game and not on what will happen in a few months’ time.

"I just want to continue focusing on the short-term goals and perform on the pitch. When the time comes to decide my future, I will, and you’ll be the first to know.”
