Riise hails Totti as a 'God' of football

Riise

Former Roma defender John Arne Riise has hailed Francesco Totti as one of the two best footballers he played with during his career

Riise, who retired earlier this year after an illustrious career that took him around European football, represented Liverpool for seven years before joining the Giallorossi - going on to become something of a cult hero at the Stadio Olimpico during his time in the Italian capital.

And the Norwegian believes Totti and Steven Gerrard are the two standout players from his time at those illustrious clubs.

"Totti is God in Rome," Riise told Goal. "[He and Gerrard] are different players.

"Gerrard was the more complete player. He had everything - power, stamina, shooting, heading, passing - and can play in different positions.

"Totti was a God. Technically he was a genius, tactically he was very good. He's a great person and gave his all on the pitch.

"They're the two best players I've played with."

Riise went on to add that a retains a great affection for both Roma and Liverpool.

"When I go to Rome even now, it's been many years since I left, but the fan support for me is still amazing," he added.

"I really, really enjoyed my time in Rome. Those two clubs will always be in my heart."
