Recap: Roma edged out on penalties in ICC opener

Roma's 2017 International Champions Cup got underway with a penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at a packed Comerica Park on Wednesday night.

The Giallorossi proved a popular attraction in Detroit as this season's summer tournament got underway, and they played their part in an entertaining 90 minutes - drawing 1-1 thanks to substitute Sadiq Umar's equaliser.

Former Roma player Marquinhos had earlier opened the scoring for the French side, and in a cruel twist of fate it was the Brazilian who would also score the decisive spot-kick in the shootout, clinching the extra point for the Parisiens after Gerson was the only player to miss his attempt.

Roma are next in action on July 25, as they face Tottenham Hotspur at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

In truth the Giallorossi did not perform at their best in the first half, although it is perhaps to be expected as the workload gradually increases for the group ahaed of the new campaign. Diego Perotti went closest for the hosts in the first 45, rifling over from a different angle.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side returned for the second half a goal behind after Marquinhos latched onto a loose ball in the box and fired home, and they immediately started to impose themselves on the contest.

Sadiq - who scored the only goal in the last friendly, against FC Slovacko - again was the goalscorer, as he was found brilliantly by Gerson before slipping a shot between the goalkeeper's legs.

A decisive goal would not be forthcoming, however, sending the game to the lottery of the penalty shootout. Alas, Roma would fall foul of the lottery on this occasion - but there were certainly positives to take from the performance.
