AS Roma are pleased to confirm the signing of midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini from Serie A side US Sassuolo.

The 21-year-old, a graduate of the Giallorossi academy, returns to Roma after two seasons with Sassuolo, for a fee of €10 million.

The Italy international has signed a five-year contract that runs until 2022.

“It is an incredible feeling to come back,” Pellegrini said. “This was my objective from the moment I went to Sassuolo. It is the culmination of a great two-year journey with them.

“I want to thank Roma, including Monchi and the rest of the directors. They have always been in close contact with me. They made me realise how much they wanted me back.”

During his two seasons with Sassuolo, Pellegrini made a total of 54 appearances for the first team. Last season he played in 28 games in Serie A, contributing six goals and seven assists, and also tasted European football for the first time in the Europa League.

In June he made his full international debut for Italy, before helping the Under-21 side reach the semi-finals of the ongoing European Championships in Poland.

“We are proud to be able to bring Lorenzo home,” sporting director Monchi said. “Over the last two years Lorenzo has gained valuable experience with Sassuolo, and we are sure he will contribute to the growth and improvement of this team.”

Pellegrini will wear the No. 7 shirt for the upcoming campaign.

Born in Rome, Pellegrini joined Roma as a 10-year-old and progressed through the age groups. A vital member of the Primavera side from 2013 to 2015, he made his debut for the first team in March 2015, in a Serie A game against Cesena.

Pellegrini becomes the third Rome-born academy product in the first-team squad, alongside Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi.
