On Monday morning it was full-back Bruno Peres's turn to sit down with Roma TV - to discuss his hopes and targets for the upcoming campaign.
After an up-and-down first season with the Giallorossi, the Brazilian is hoping to learn the lessons from that experience and show his real qualities under new coach Eusebio Di Francesco.
See everything he had to say in the transcript below.
Have you noticed during this retreat that the fans have been very encouraging towards you?
Bruno Peres: “Yes, I have noticed that the fans are showing me a different encouragement, and this will be important for the coming season. This support gives us something more; coming back to work is always difficult, but when the fans are pushing you on it gives you the strength to achieve your targets.”
In Di Francesco’s system he gets the wide players very involved in the game…
“In the Mister’s style of play the wide players are used a lot. We can be important to make the difference in the game. We want to get better and get used to the approach he wants from us.”
For a Brazilian it’s very different to play in a defensive line of four or a five, right?
“When you play in a four you can push forward, but not in the same way that you can in a five-man defence. These are the sort of things you need to get used to, we need to work hard on having the right attitude. The thing you need to learn here is that defending well in this league means being one of the best in the world.”
In your role we have had maybe one of the best full-backs in the history of the game: Cafu. What does it mean to play in the same position and for the same team?
“He is an idol, and extraordinary character. I know him a little bit. Other than Cafu there was also Maicon, two great examples of full-backs. I want to learn something from them.”
Between scoring a goal and providing an assist, which do you prefer?
“I prefer going up the other end and scoring a goal. I like doing that, but it’s never the first thought in my head. We have to be decisive in the final third and put in the right balls for our teammates."
After the great goal against Juventus [for Torino], were there big expectations on you?
“After that goal, maybe everyone expected me to be rampaging forward. It’s not that easy, especially because after that goal everyone is ready for it, and mark you in two or three. But you always need to try it, the speed I have can always be utilised. Just now it has become a bit more difficult.”
What are the differences between playing for Torino and Roma? If there are any?
“It’s totally different. Last season I struggled a bit. At Torino there is not the same pressure. They told me that it would be a difficult arena, but a beautiful one. And that is the case, but I like it. It’s a stage where they will support you, they will push you to get better. Last season did not go as I wanted. During the summer I was in Brazil, I reflected, I spoke to my parents and I thought that for me this season will be completely different.”
What are your objectives this season?
“I want to win something with Roma. I want to become the Bruno that everyone wants to see. I think I am on the right road. I am working well, listening to everything that they tell me, to improve and so that this year can be very different for me and the team.”
Would you be surprised to be used higher up the pitch by the coach?
“That role I have already played before. It is true that playing higher up does not come with the same high tempo. I want to be important. Last year I learned a lot: now I am more mature and I hope to do well this season.”
