El Shaarawy: We need more conviction in front of goal

Stephan El Shaarawy hopes the squad will use Wednesday's Coppa Italia exit as motivation as they turn their attention to Saturday's Serie A clash with Juventus.

The Giallorossi lost 2-1 to Torino at the Stadio Olimpico to exit the cup in the round-of-16, despite Patrik Schick's first goal for the club and a host of other goalscoring opportunities.

Speaking afterwards, El Shaarawy - who hit the post with a stunning first-half effort - admitted his side must quickly move on from their disappointment.

“The last few games it’s been difficult to score, but in terms of chances created we’ve had a lot," he said. "We need to be determined and put the ball in the net.”

What is the mood in the dressing room after this loss?

“There’s a lot of regret because it was an important target for us. We gave it a lot: we prepared well, we started the game with the right attitude, we conceded from a set-piece but after that we did everything to get back in the game. The attitude was there, we created chances but the ball wouldn’t go in.”

Will this defeat give you more hunger and drive ahead of the game against Juventus?

"At Torino we will not have so many chances, so they ones we do create we will have to take advantage of. Juventus’s biggest strength is in defence. We will have to have quality and conviction.”

Does the fact that the performance was there at least help?

“The performance was there, even from those who have not played as much. The attitude and the focus weren’t missing. We need to be stronger than any bad luck – we must put this result behind us and focus on the next challenge.

"We will concentrate on the league and the Champions League and getting a good result in Turin would give us more strength and confidence.”

Will the attitude against Juventus have to be the same?

“We will need to go there with eyes open: we have the ability to play like we did today, high and pressing to impose our style. We go there to win, not to sit back. We know how important the game is and we will try to win.”
