3x3: Roma-Shakhtar, Milan and Champions League predictions

Monther from Arab World Roma Club joins Ajay Menon from @ASRomaIndia and Ed Moynihan of @Forza27_RS as they are put on the spot with three topical football questions…

The Roma Question: Will Roma beat Shakhtar at the Olimpico and qualify for the quarter-finals?

Monther / @Monther_qk: “Roma's got all the material to win, and will win, and qualify for the next round. They had a lot of chances that could have changed the game in Kharkiv, but unfortunately we didn't and we made it hard for ourselves. But the next match will be in our stadium, and we’ve got our crowd behind us – this will be a huge advantage for us.”

Ajay / @ASRomaIndia: “Yes. I think we have given ourselves a fighting chance with that away goal. We need to be ruthless in front of goal and maintain a tight ship at the back.”

Ed / @Forza27_RS: “It will be tough and dramatic. Basically, just your average Roma night, but hopefully a special one. It’s crucial to remain 100% organised and disciplined for the 90 minutes and not let Shakhtar get that away goal, and we’ll need big players like Nainggolan and Dzeko to have big games. With Roma’s vital away goal, grinding out a 1-0 home win is more than achievable.”

The Serie A Question: Has Milan’s form surprised you since they changed their coach?

@Monther_qk: “Yes, I didn’t expect it from Rino, but he changed their tactics and the way they think. Now even Napoli, Juve and Roma are maybe afraid of him and his boys. He has rediscovered his players, starting with the captain, and the magnificent young striker Patrick Cutrone. Any credit given to Milan this year will be because of Rino.”

@ASRomaIndia: “Well, I am a huge admirer of Vincenzo Montella (obviously), so I was a bit surprised at the struggles he faced at the start of the season which lead to his sacking. This current Milan team is good for a fifth or sixth place at best. Rino Gattuso has revitalised Milan but they need to go on a consistent run to get close to the UCL spots. I would be surprised if they get a top four spot at the end of the season.”

@Forza27_RS: “Not too much. The Milan players appear to be responding to Gattuso’s passion and spirit – everything that embodied him as a player – that ‘new manager effect,’ and he has gotten them back to basics and made them defensively solid. But that’s something which can only last so long. Tactically they may be limited and I can’t see Gattuso being a long-term solution.”

The General Football Question: Now the first leg ties have all been played, which two teams do you think will meet in the Champions League final?

@Monther_qk: “In my opinion I think the only two teams who have super players and magnificent coaches are Manchester City and Bayern Munich. I think we will see this as the final. The last time I saw a club play like City was Barcelona, when their coach was the same man who now coaches the Citizens.”

@ASRomaIndia: “Can we go a 1984-esque run and make it to the final? That would be a realisation of a sweet dream. Okay, keeping my giallorosso-tinted glasses aside, on current form, a Bayern Munich-Manchester City final would be a real spectacle to behold!”

@Forza27_RS: “This year it’s hard to see past Manchester City, who look set to conquer all before them. Depending on the draw, I think Barcelona could go all the way, while you can never write off Real Madrid in this competition.”
