Pellegrini: Grinding out the wins shows our spirit

Lorenzo Pellegrini acknowledged that Roma could have been more clinical on Saturday night, but believes the victory over Bologna nevertheless showed signs of the teams continued growth.

The Giallorossi picked up a third 1-0 win in the space of six days against Roberto Donadoni’s side at the Stadio Olimpico, this time thanks to Stephan El Shaarawy’s blistering strike.

And Pellegrini, who was substituted off late in the game, believes the stubbornness the team showed to see another close game out bodes well for the future.

“Of course it is always important to win, but the difference in the number of goals against opponents is always something relative – I think in the end it’s always three points that you take away,” Pellegrini said. “Today and on Wednesday we definitely had more chances to score and could have finished the game off before the end, but we got the three points and we’re happy with that.”

He added: “As some have said before, perhaps a few years ago – or even last year – a game like this Roma would not have seen out. So I think doing so shows a good spirit, a willingness to dig in and work together on the pitch in each and every game to win even when it isn’t straightforward.”

The midfielder believes he still has a lot of room for improvement, but believes both he and the team are heading in the right direction.

“You can always get better,” Pellegrini added. “Maybe dominating physically is not my strong point at the moment, and I’m working on that. I also hope to get my first goal for the side soon because for any player that is something very important.

“But I hope to keep working and if we continue to improve like we are at the moment: I’d be happy.”
