Pellegrini: "It was very important to win this match"

Lorenzo Pellegrini spoke to the media after Roma’s 1-0 victory over Sassuolo on Sunday evening.

Here’s what the goalscorer had to say…

A much-needed victory following a tough first half.

"I think it's fair for a team that is up there in the table. One thing is losing, one thing is drawing, and one thing is winning.

“Today, we needed to win at any costs. The way things went in Florence, it was important to win and not lose. We achieved this, and these three points are critical.”

    The hug with De Rossi?

"There is a lot of respect. Daniele has always served as a reference point for me. I had the opportunity of working with him as a teammate and now as a coach.

“It seems right now that I enjoy him as a coach, and he enjoys me as a player.”

Also because you decided the game. What has changed in your performance recently?

"I guess it's because I'm always in the middle of the game. I need to feel free in the middle of the pitch, and find my position. Then I can understand the space where I can receive the ball, aim, and make the play.

"That's what I missed for the past year and a half, and I'm glad I've discovered it again. For myself, for Roma, for my teammates, for everyone. And most importantly for this club that is so close to us and makes us feel like we matter.”

What was your reaction when Milan was drawn?

"We know that, as was the case last year, all of the teams are strong. It could have been Milan, but also another option would have been difficult.

"When the time comes, we will play this tie to try to and advance to the round, even if Milan are a very strong team. We must have our awareness, and continue to work and improve.”
